The second, in 1535 by Bahadur Shah of Gujarat, resulted in the Jauhar led by Rani Karnavati. The final siege, in 1568 by the Mughal Emperor Akbar, led to the fort's fall and another Jauhar, after which the capital of Mewar was shifted to Udaipur. The fort was eventually returned to the Rajputs but never regained its former political importance, remaining a powerful symbol of their heritage.
